Barry’s Garden Bed: Building Pride and Purpose

September 12, 2025

Barry had a simple answer when asked why he wanted to build his own garden bed:

“Because I want to.”

It’s a typically cheeky response from Barry, whose straightforward humour shines through in everything he does.

Over the past month, with support from Grant his Disability Support Worker and his dog Peaches, Barry has been busy cutting, measuring and piecing together recycled timber. The project hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been filled with laughs.

As Barry sums it up with a grin:

“It was easy. We’re laughing.”

“Barry’s happiest when we’re out here working on it together,” adds Grant. “It gives him something to look forward to each week.”

This isn’t Barry’s first attempt at gardening. His last carrot crop didn’t grow very big, a story he now laughs about. With the new garden bed finally finished, he’s already joking about giving carrots another go.

We’re now calling on our community to help this garden grow. If you have seedlings, seeds or plant donations, your contribution will help Barry take the next step, and continue building something meaningful.
