Back in September 2025, Barry built his own garden bed with the support of Grant, one of his Disability Support workers and Peaches his dog.
Recently that hard work has paid off in the best way possible.
During a gardening session, Barry discovered the potato plants were ready to harvest. He enthusiastically dug up a substantial crop, proudly admiring what he had grown.
But the story didn’t end there.
Barry was then supported to turn his freshly harvested potatoes into hot, crispy chips, enjoying the full journey of garden to plate.
After harvesting, he also planted plant tomato and strawberry seedlings and independently assisted with watering them, showing sustained interest and initiative throughout the activity.
From building the bed… to harvesting potatoes… to cooking and enjoying his own hot chips…to planting the next crop, Barry’s project has grown into something far bigger than a backyard activity.
It’s about pride.
It’s about independence.
It’s about seeing effort turn into something real.
