Cooking Up Confidence: Al’s Journey Towards Independence

August 27, 2025

For Al, the kitchen used to be a place of uncertainty. Today, it’s a space of confidence, creativity and pride.

Al’s journey toward healthier living is more than a story about food. It’s about discovering independence, building self-belief, and finding joy in everyday routines. With the support of his team at eQuality Support, Al has made remarkable progress, step by step, meal by meal.

Routine and consistency have been key. With encouragement from his team, Al has established regular cooking days, planned meals and built healthy habits that stick. On Sundays, he prepares roast chicken and wedges, a meal he looks forward to each week. Butter chicken is another favourite, often cooked for dinner and saved for lunch the next day.

“Al’s come a long way,” says Ebi, one of his Disability Support Workers. “He used to be more withdrawn and would often stick to the same meals. Now he’s excited to try new things, and he’s proud of what he cooks. Sometimes we even look up recipes on YouTube and figure it out together. I’ve seen him become more positive, more engaged, and even sleeping better.”

Cooking has had a ripple effect on Al’s wellbeing. He’s more engaged, more active in his routines and finding joy in preparing meals that reflect his own choices.

A big part of Al’s success comes from personalised cooking cards created with the support of his team. These step-by-step visual cards, filled with photos of Al cooking during his Day Program at MaudCare, help him choose what to make, remind him of meals he’s enjoyed and boost his confidence.

“Those cards give Al options,” says Ebi. “They show him what he’s already achieved, which lifts his morale and makes him want to do it again. It’s proof he can do it and do it well.”

When it’s time to decide what’s for dinner, Al flips through his booklet, smiles at his progress, and chooses something that makes him feel good.

Al’s story is a powerful reminder that progress doesn’t always come in leaps. Often, it’s the quiet, consistent steps, taken with the right support, that lead to lasting change.
