For years, Jack has found comfort, clarity and expression in the pages of history and literature. What started as a quiet personal passion, scribbling poems, reimagining myths and exploring darker emotions through storytelling, has recently grown into something much bigger.
With the gentle encouragement of Dana, one of Jack’s Disability Support Workers, Jack has taken a brave and exciting step: he has begun sharing his work publicly on Wattpad.
“I’ve always found history quite fascinating,” Jack says. “With literature, it’s a place where I can voice my opinions with room for me to take a better look at myself.”
He has been writing on and off for about three years, but only recently began taking his poems more seriously. The push to publish came after a series of conversations with his support team, who recognised both his talent and the importance of purpose in his day-to-day life.
“It takes a bit of confidence to move from writing on paper to sharing it online,” Jack admits. “But uploading felt oddly liberating. It made me think there might be a community who appreciates my work.”
Jack’s writing draws on a wide range of influences: Greek mythology, early medieval history, Stephen King thrillers, Shakespearean tragedy and ancient storytelling traditions. But at the heart of it all is something deeply personal.
He often blends mythology and metaphor with the lived experience of depression, anxiety, despair, hopelessness and, importantly, hope and heartfulness.
“Sometimes writing about things like self-hatred can feel scary,” he shares. “But returning to it helps me finish what I started and learn from it.”
For Dana, supporting Jack through this creative leap has been one of the most rewarding parts of her role.
She first learned about Jack’s passion for writing when he nervously asked if she’d like to read one of his poems.
“He has deep feelings in his writing,” she recalls. “I felt really honoured that he trusted me with that.”
As they talked more, Dana realised Jack was looking for not just a hobby, but a sense of purpose; something meaningful to connect him with others. The idea of publishing online, even anonymously, seemed like a natural fit.
“I used Wattpad when I was younger,” she explains. “It lets you create your own covers, build a following, and even have authors see your work. I thought it might give Jack a chance to be found.”
Jack embraced the idea and even created his own AI-generated cover art, blending his passion for writing with a love of visual creativity he can no longer pursue as easily with his hands.
Watching Jack hit “publish” for the first time was a moment Dana won’t forget.
“I saw a fire light up in his eyes,” she says. “A real spark of passion and excitement. When someone you support, especially someone who’s been struggling with depression, finds something that lights them up… it means everything.”
Dana believes creativity has a powerful role in wellbeing.
“It can give emotional release, a sense of purpose and new opportunities. And as support workers, it helps us understand our clients more deeply, often more than words alone.”
Today, Jack has published several poems and is already planning his next uploads. Some pieces explore tragic love. Others retell ancient stories with new meaning. Some are raw and honest reflections of his inner world, the kind many readers will connect to immediately.
“I hope people who read my work might feel less alone,” Jack says. “Or maybe they’ll feel encouraged to write down their own experiences.”
When asked what he would say to someone who’s hesitant about sharing their creativity, Jack doesn’t hesitate:
“I would say do it. You don’t have much to lose. The thought of uploading was scarier than actually uploading. Once you take away the reasons you’ve made up in your head, it’s not as hard as you think.”
Jack’s journey is only just beginning and we’re incredibly proud of him.
If you’d like to read the work he’s chosen to share publicly, you can find him on Wattpad under his author profile JpSixx26. (shared with permission).
This project reflects not just Jack’s talent, but the power of encouragement, connection and creativity in shaping someone’s sense of self and purpose. We can’t wait to see what he writes next.
