From timber to teamwork, Gerard’s career pivot is built on resilience, empathy and purpose.
After decades in the building industry, a serious back injury changed everything. Multiple surgeries and years of recovery made carpentry harder, and industry changes left him rethinking the future. Encouraged by friends and shaped by his own family’s experience with disability through his two sisters, Gerard decided it was time to follow his long-held interest in support work.
“I’d looked into becoming a DSW before my injury,” Gerard says. “But things got worse, and I had to wait. Eventually, I needed to pivot, and support work felt like the right fit.”
Today, Gerard works five night shifts a week with eQuality Support, while also running a successful handyman business during the day. It’s a full schedule, but he thrives on the variety.
“I rarely say no to shifts. I just keep a colour-coded diary and make sure I don’t overdo it,” he laughs. “eQuality Support is my main gig and it’s a good mob to work for; well structured, well supported. You’re never on your own.”
One of his proudest moments came from supporting Terri, a client who struggled with confidence and morning routines. With Gerard’s encouragement, she now starts her day with pride and independence.
“She told me I’d changed her life. That’s what makes it worth it.”
Gerard’s carpentry skills still come in handy, whether it’s problem-solving, staying creative, or building rapport with clients.
“People management and reading the room, those skills transfer. And I get paid to do fun things like go to the movies with clients. It’s rewarding.”
Donna, Gerard’s Client Services Officer, agrees: “He really loves his job! He’s great with clients and has such a natural way with them. They love him.”
Outside of work, Gerard spends time with his grandkids or heads out fishing in Port Phillip Bay. His motto?
“Life is a game of luck and decisions. Don’t judge anyone, you’re only a couple of bad decisions away from being in their shoes.”
