After years in jobs that didn’t quite fit, Harry knew he wanted more than a paycheck, he wanted purpose. A conversation with his partner led him to enrol in a disability support course through genU Training in Ballarat. That decision changed everything.
“I’d been really sick and off work for a while,” Harry shares. “I didn’t want to just get another job to pay the bills. I wanted something that suited me.”
While navigating Centrelink and working with AXIS Employment, Harry was referred to eQuality Support for a student placement. That’s where he met Matt, a mentor who made an immediate impact.
“I was nervous. I hadn’t been social for a while and had no idea what I was walking into,” Harry recalls. “But Matt put me at ease straight away. I learnt so much from him, especially how to stay composed and always put the client first.”
His placement gave him the skills and confidence to step into a Disability Support Worker role in Ballarat. Harry now works seven shifts a fortnight, mostly with one of our newer clients, and still catches up with Greg and Leon, two clients he met during placement.
“The work really suits me. I’ve learnt to slow down and focus on the little things that make clients happy, whether it’s cleaning, getting them to appointments, or just being there.”
Support from the team, especially Kath and Shelly, has made a lasting impression. “It’s the best workplace I’ve ever been part of. Everyone helps each other out. It’s a safe space.”
Harry’s journey shows how placements can lead to more than just a job, they can open the door to a meaningful career. Sometimes, all it takes is saying yes to the first step.
