What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS-funded support that helps people with disabilities live as independently as possible in their home. SIL funding covers the support you receive, not rent or the property itself.

SIL is typically suited to participants who require regular daily assistance, including overnight or 24/7 support.

What support does SIL include?

Your SIL support is tailored to your NDIS plan and personal goals. It may include:

Assistance with personal care and daily routines

Support with cooking, cleaning and household tasks

Medication prompts and health-related support

Skill development to build independence

Active overnight or 24-hour support where required

Structured support for participants with higher needs or behaviours of concern

At eQuality Support, SIL is never about taking over. It’s about building confidence, strengthening routines and creating stability in your home. If you are new to Supported Independent Living or considering changing SIL providers, we guide you step by step through the process so you feel informed and supported.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between SIL and SDA?
SIL (Supported Independent Living) funds the support you receive in your home.

SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) refers to the physical property  designed for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs

In simple terms:

  • SIL = support services
  • SDA = specialised housing

Some participants have both SIL and SDA funding, while others may only have SIL.

How do I apply for Supported Independent Living?
To access SIL,  funding must be included in your NDIS plan. This typically requires an assessment demonstrating your need for regular support.

If you’re unsure whether SIL is right for you, we can:

  • Help you understand eligibility
  • Work with your Support Coordinator
  • Provide documentation to support planning discussions

You don’t have to navigate it alone.

Who is eligible for SIL?
SIL is generally designed for individuals with significant support needs who require ongoing assistance throughout the day or overnight. Eligibility is determined through your NDIS planning process.

If your current support no longer feels right, or your needs have changed, it may be time to explore SIL options.
